After the success of last year’s pilot edition, more than 1.500 teenagers are invited to attend the Youth Days between April 10-12, the program designed especially for them at the 18th edition of the One World Romania International Documentary & Human Rights Film Festival. Seven film screenings followed by open discussions, 15 non-formal civic and media education workshops, a community lunch, and an NGO fair are waiting for them at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest.
This year’s program proposes not only an experience of familiarization with documentary film, but also one of social-emotional exploration, for a diverse category of teenagers from high schools in Bucharest and the surrounding area. The cinematic experience will be complemented by civic and media education workshops prepared together with Expert Forum, Funky Citizens, Accept, Greenpeace, MaiMultVerde, Code For Romania, ApTI (Association for Technology and Internet), Copii pentru Viitor, Arhiva de Imagine MȚR, Limite de Cadru, and UNHCR.
The visual identity of this second edition was created by Roxana Neghină, an 11th grade student at the “Nicolae Tonitza” Fine Arts High School in Bucharest, who also won the 1500 lei prize offered in the competition. The author says her work “represents the joy of high school students, their dynamism, team spirit and «in and out» vision”.
The Youth Days are presented by Kaufland Romania. Participation in the events is free of charge, with previous registration required: https://forms.gle/mMTVgvwCDeyAie3C7
For the first time, the participants are encouraged to use public transportation through the “Human Rights’ Bus” initiative, which will run on the 282 line during the entire festival.
Among the documentaries screened during the Youth Days are “The White House Effect” (dir. Bonni Cohen, Pedro Kos, Jon Shenk), which will be followed by a discussion on climate change and the launch of Teach for Romania’s environmental podcast “Green Voice”, and “CALIU: Nothing Else, What Else Can I Do?” (dir. Simona Constantin), followed by a live performance by the members of the “Crescut pe muzică” ensemble. A handful of short films will also be screened, presented in three thematic programs: “Together” – “Out of the City” (dir. Ahmed Essam Soliman), “Blue” (dir. Ana Vîjdea) and “Sister of Mine” (dir. Mariusz Rusiński); “Generations” – “Dancing at My Parents’ Wedding” (dir. Andreea Chiper), “There Are No Fir Trees Here” (dir. Valentin Rareș Fogoroș), “By Myself I Never Get Bored” (dir. Octavia Bortișcă), and “Simply Divine” (dir. Mélody Boulissière, Bogdan Stamatin); and “Resistance” – “The Diary of Florica S.” (dir. Eugenia Gutu), “Bimbos Against Capitalism” (dir. Ana Floares), “Teen Angst” (dir. Inga Pylypchuk), “Solid as a Rock” (dir. Tiva Pam), and “How to Disappear” (dir. Robin Klengel, Leonhard Müllner, Michael Stumpf). Completing the “Generations” screening, a meet-up between teens and seniors will also take place, in partnership with a day center from Bucharest.
This year’s Youth Days workshops cover a range of important topics, from the presidential elections and plastic pollution to artificial intelligence, fake news and digital rights. The workshops will be presented by the participants of the NGO Fair, which will run throughout the entire event in the foyer of the cinema. 19 organizations from various fields are waiting for teenagers interested in volunteering opportunities at the specially arranged stands:

Established in 2009, the One World Romania Association organizes the only documentary film and human rights festival in the country, One World Romania, which takes place annually in Bucharest. The association works with documentary film as a vehicle for social and political dialogue, as a window to the world and an environment that prompts reflection. Through its activities, the association supports the development of the demand for documentaries in Romania, leading in recent years to an increased interest in this genre, both among the general public and within educational programs.
