Marc Isaacs Is the Special Guest of the 2025 One World Romania
5 March 2025

British filmmaker Marc Isaacs is the special guest of the 18th edition of One World Romania. His career, which spans more than 20 years and has earned him nominations at awards like the BAFTAs, Grierson and Royal Television Society, will be celebrated in Bucharest, where seven of his films will be screened between April 9-12 at Cinema Elvire Popesco and Cinema Union. The audience will be able to meet with Isaacs at the Q&A sessions after the screenings, as well as at the masterclass he will give at the end of the retrospective, on April 13.

Marc Isaacs, who previously attended OWR in 2011, has been praised for perfecting the art of getting up close and personal with his subjects – close enough to gain the trust of those he is filming, but having enough distance to still be able to ask difficult and deeply personal questions. The Times praised his “astounding gift for getting people to open up to him” and “the way he uses film the way a very skilled artist uses paint. The result is beautiful, heartbreaking and profoundly humane.”

Known for his lyrical approach, Isaacs has made no less than 19 films, tackling issues such as multicultural life in the UK (“All White in Barking”, “Outsiders”), the 2008 financial crisis (“Men of the City”), the epidemic of loneliness among truckers (“When Night Falls”), or the situation of asylum seekers in Calais (“Calais: The Last Border”).

Nestled comfortably between fiction and documentary, Isaacs’ cinema is one of intervention, an evolving cinematic form of provocation that goes beyond the observational – a “planned spontaneity” that remains in constant dialogue with reality.

Among the films to be screened at OWR18 are also his debut, the BAFTA-nominated short film “Lift”, and “The Filmmaker’s House”, an independent film which tackles head-on themes of racism, Brexit, acceptance, and humanity.

Early Bird passes for the International Documentary & Human Rights Film Festival One World Romania are now on sale through Eventbook.ro, at the discounted price of 200 lei. During the pre-sale campaign for its 18th edition, OWR aims to sell at least 500 full passes for the festival to run its course as planned. In Bucharest, the festival will take place from April 4-13 at Cinema Peasant Museum, Cinema Elvire Popesco and Cinema Union. Afterwards, many of the films will also be available to stream online, from anywhere in Romania, from April 14-30.

Established in 2009, the One World Romania Association organizes the only documentary film and human rights festival in the country, One World Romania, which takes place annually in Bucharest. The association works with documentary film as a vehicle for social and political dialogue, as a window to the world and an environment that prompts reflection. Through its activities, the association supports the development of the demand for documentaries in Romania, leading in recent years to an increased interest in this genre, both among the general public and within educational programs.
