KineDok – the European network bringing creative documentaries to alternative venues – continues in December with screenings in 14 cities across Romania: Bârlad, Botoșani, Brașov, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Făgăraș, Galați, Onești, Oradea, Petroșani, Rădăuți, Reșița, Sibiu and Timișoara. The project’s effort to bring documentaries closer to audiences is further supported through online screenings and film-based discussions. Admission is free of charge for all events – both in-person and online.
This month’s featured film is the Romanian documentary Imaginary Youth, directed by Ruxandra Gubernat, available to watch online between 4-9 December, with English subtitles, in Romania as well as in all partner countries: Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. The discussion delving into the themes of "Imaginary Youth" will be available on KineDok Romania’s Facebook Page starting Monday, December 8, at 8:00 PM, and will take place in English. The guest speakers are Ruxandra Gubernat, documentary filmmaker, visual artist and researcher, and Hana Pribilincová, psychologist at IPčko Slovakia, an online first-aid and psychological counselling helpline for crisis situations. The discussion is moderated by Andra Mureșan, journalist and reporter at Scena9, whose investigations on social topics have been awarded at the Superscrieri Gala.

The three guests discuss how we can better understand Gen Z and their shared ideals; the reasons why the protagonists considered emigrating; parallels between the experiences and challenges faced by Romanian and Slovak youth; the long-term effects of the pandemic; how new generations prepare for a future shaped by artificial intelligence; and much more.
"Imaginary Youth" (2024, 84 mins.) follows three teenagers through their final years of high school, before, during, and after the Covid confinement. While pondering about leaving Romania after they finish school, Una – an actress, Habet – a trapper, and Ștefania – an environmental activist, get caught in the midst of the Coronavirus crisis. Personal dramas and dilemmas unfold, as the three try to make sense of growing up and what’s happening around them. Who’s gonna make it?
Ruxandra Gubernat will also attend a screening and discussion of "Imaginary Youth" at the Brașov Philharmonic on December 5, at 7:30 PM, as part of SETbv, organised by District Hub.

KineDok is a unique European program, running simultaneously in five partner countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Romania, where it is coordinated by the One World Romania Association, in close partnership with the film festival. Each of the participating countries contributes some of their latest documentaries, which are screened in hundreds of alternative venues, bridging cultures and communities. Audiences have the chance to watch a selection of films that are not usually screened in regular cinemas and to take part in lively post-screening debates with filmmakers and local experts from different fields.
