Launched in 2022, "Docs at the Library" is the most recent educational project organised by the One World Romania Association, in partnership with Mediawise Society and KineDok Romania.
“Docs at the Library” introduces documentary film in libraries as a media tool for debate on social topics and human rights issues, taking a committed step to increase the critical thinking skills of the general public. At the same time, seeing libraries as nodes of knowledge, the initiative represents a long-term effort to build their institutional capacity and enrich their resources, through community activities and the development of new skills among librarians.
Each year, the project is carried out in two stages. The first is a series of media literacy courses for librarians. With the guidance of the trainers, participants then apply the knowledge gained in order to organise film screenings and debates for their libraries’ visitors, during the second stage.
The project started in 2022 in Dâmbovița, Gorj and Tulcea counties, continued in 2023 in Bucharest, Dâmbovița and Vâlcea, while in 2024 it took place in Dâmbovița, Ialomița, Neamț and Teleorman. In 2022, the 65 librarians who participated in the courses organised 85 events in 48 libraries. In 2023, 60 librarians organised 78 events in 28 libraries. During 2024, 94 librarians benefited from the courses and 60 screenings took place in 27 libraries.
“We have great faith in the potential of libraries to become cultural centers for the community, to help develop media literacy for civic engagement, and to contribute to the understanding of documentary film. We believe that the events that librarians organize in their communities, for an audience of all ages, encourage debate, critical analysis and reflection on topics of interest such as gender equality, racism, discrimination or environmental protection”, say the project’s two trainers, Nicoleta Fotiade, media and digital literacy trainer and president of Mediawise Society, and Ionuț Mareș, film critic and journalist.
Cultural project co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.
