KineDok, the European program that promotes creative documentaries in alternative venues, organised in Romania by the One World Romania Association, returns across the country for its 10th anniversary edition, with a new selection of films and debates with filmmakers and other guests ready to explore the topics of the films.
On this special occasion, the film catalogue is more extensive than before: in addition to 13 recent documentaries from the participating countries – Czech Republic, Croatia, Georgia, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania – a selection of archive films, a Focus on Ukraine and a short film programme will also be available to the local partners.
The selection comprises a total of 22 films and is available for screenings until April 2025. Two VR experiences will soon be added to the program for the first time. The Romanian documentaries selected this year are Arsenie. An Amazing Afterlife, by Alexandru Solomon; Between Revolutions, by Vlad Petri; and The Case of Engineer Ursu, by Liviu Tofan and Șerban Georgescu.
Therefore, over the next few months, you can expect screenings in museums, libraries, high schools, gardens, galleries – diversifying the distribution chain beyond cinema halls. At KineDok, any wall can become a film!
The opening of the new edition will be celebrated in Bucharest and Galați with screenings of the documentary +-90, by Marek Kuboš (Slovakia, 2022, 90 min.), in which the director aims to uncover the perspectives of Slovak documentarians, focusing especially on a successful generation popular during the 90s. +-90 places them in a broader context, tracing the connections between national history, cinematic history and personal history, while also serving as an autobiographical documentary. Admission is free of charge to both screenings.
The screening in Bucharest will take place on June 5, at 7:00 PM, at the Czech Centre (11 Ion Ghica Street) and will be followed by a discussion with the audience, attended by: Marek Kuboš, the director of the film, and Martin Derner, visual artist and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. The discussion will be moderated by Irina Trocan, film critic. We also invite you to join us for a glass of wine or a Czech Budweiser Budvar beer.
Synopsis: In his latest film, documentary filmmaker Marek Kuboš opens up to other colleagues from the Slovak documentary film industry. He divides them into three generations: his own generation (the 1990s), the previous generation and the next. Kuboš brings them together to discuss their passion for cinema, technical and economic challenges and the evolving ethical and artistic frontiers of documentary filmmaking. At the heart of the narrative are the accomplished filmmakers who emerged in the 1990s: Milan Balog, Peter Kerekes, Robert Kirchhoff, Juraj Lehotský, Marko Škop, Zuza Piussi, Jaro Vojtek and Marek Kuboš. The director also conducts interviews with their predecessors: Dušan Hanák, Mário Homolko, Ľubo Štecko, Alexander Strelinger, Mišo Suchý, Martin Šulík, Dušan Trančík, whom he embeds together with their works in a larger cultural and political context.
+-90 premiered at Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival and received a Special Jury Prize at One World Slovakia.
Marek Kuboš (born in 1970) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where he studied as part of a group of Slovak directors now known as the Generation 90. Kuboš's documentaries are characterized by thematic diversity and social engagement. Among his notable films are A Photographer’s Journey (1993), Voice 98 (1999), Such a Little Propaganda (2001), and The Last Self-Portrait (2018).
KineDok 10 Opening in Galați
In Galați, the screening will take place on June 6, starting at 6:00 PM, at the Visual Arts Museum (3 Tecuci Street), one of KineDok România's longstanding local partners. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Marek Kuboš and Martin Derner, moderated by Ada-Simona Biriș, museum educator and curator.
KineDok 10 preview at the Romanian Order of Architects
On May 30, from 9:00 PM, Casa Mincu (the headquarters of the Romanian Order of Architects, 19 Pictor Arthur Verona Street, Bucharest) is hosting a screening in the frame of Romanian Design Week – The White Night of Architecture Studios. The film they will screen is 66 Seasons, by Peter Kerekes (Slovakia, Czech Republic, 2003, 86 min.), part of the archive films selection of this year’s KineDok catalogue. In the heart of interwar Košice, the public swimming pool becomes a silent witness to the tumult of Central European history. In a vibrant mosaic, director Peter Kerekes reveals 66 seasons of memories, brought to life by archival footage and cinematic reenactments.
KineDok in Bistrița
On May 30 we will also be at the Bistrița Cultural Palace (Municipal Cultural Centre “George Coșbuc”, 10 Albert Berger Street), where the Hungarian documentary KIM, by Erika Kapronczai, will be screened from 7:30 PM.

KineDok is a unique European program, running simultaneously in six partner countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Georgia and Romania, where it is coordinated by the One World Romania Association, in close partnership with the film festival. Each of the participating countries contributes some of their latest documentaries, which are screened in hundreds of alternative venues – museums, galleries, gardens, libraries, schools – in all six countries, bridging cultures and communities.
